This competition for a company retreat in Salzburg, Austria represents a true zero-energy building, in the definition that all energy needed to keep the interior climate comfortable is either secondary heat by appliances, light and the inhabitants or direct solar heat gain. Every architectural means to achieve this goal was exhausted, starting from envelope insulation, high efficiency glazing and complete elimination of thermal bridges over envelope exposure, building shape & direction, to green roofs, reduced temperature fluctuations by exposed interior building mass and energy recovery from ventilation air and waste water. The architectural design was substantiated by full envelope calculations and room to room simulations based upon day to day sun angle & temperature data for that location. |
